My adult son stays with me a few days a week. His summer job is close to my place. He’s a great kid, but sometimes his thinking seems a little sideways, like he thought of the last thing first and the first thing last. To top it off, he acts like everyone else is mixed up because we didn’t follow his thinking!

Tonight, he offered to go pick up pizza if I ordered it. We’re having a heat wave and I don’t like to cook, so I agreed to the deal.

While he was out I got a call from him. He said, “Can you let me in? My hands are holding two pizzas!” It took a moment for me to process what he said, because it sounded like, “Cue lemming in? Mahan’s holding two pizzas!” I struggled to say something; Then, when it had been processed, answered, “Yeah. Okay.”

I got up and opened the door. He wasn’t there. I thought he might be stuck at the gate, so I opened it. He wasn’t there either. I went back inside, leaving the gate and door open. I called him back. He answered, “I’ll be there. Just a second.”

A minute later he arrived. As he was coming up to the door, I could hear him saying, “What?! Mom!!” And as he stepped inside, “Mom! You left all the doors open – the cats could get out!”

Being a parent is (still) a lot of work.

Footnote:

It turns out he tried to time his arrival so I would open the doors right when he pulled up, but he was late. And no, the cats didn’t get out!
